Understanding the hierarchy
Geological units are organised hierarchically. A Group may contain several Formations, which may themselves be divided into Members and more specific Beds or horizons. Where possible, LBPS records fossils against the most precise geological unit that can be reliably identified.

Geological Age
Geological units also belong to particular intervals of geological time. As the LBPS database expands into additional geological periods and areas of Britain, this section will develop to provide broader geological and stratigraphic information.
