Lithornis hookeri

(Harrison, 1984)

Common name Lithornithid bird

Order Lithornithiformes
Family Lithornithidae
Genus Lithornis
Taxonomic status Taxonomically Uncertain
Geological age Ypresian

Summary

Lithornis hookeri was a very small lithornithid, one of the volant palaeognathous birds that formed part of the early Cenozoic terrestrial bird fauna. Modern authors often write the combination as ?Lithornis hookeri because its assignment to Lithornis is less secure than that of better represented species.

Lithornithids were capable fliers but had long legs suited to walking and foraging on the ground. A diet of small invertebrates and other readily collected foods is plausible, although direct dietary evidence for L. hookeri is lacking. The fragmentary nature of the material makes ecological and taxonomic restraint especially important.

Quick Identification

Look for: very small lithornithid limb material matching the type of Pediorallus hookeri. Do not assign a small palaeognath bone to Lithornis hookeri on size alone; the generic placement itself remains tentative.

Diagnostic Features

  • The species is markedly small within known lithornithiform birds.
  • The preserved hindlimb morphology supports Lithornithidae rather than a rail like neognath.
  • The original material was described in Pediorallus and later transferred tentatively to Lithornis.
  • The current generic assignment is commonly signalled with a question mark in specialist literature.
  • Species identification should be restricted to material closely matching the type morphology and proportions.

Fossil Details

Preservation
Limited and incomplete bones make both species and generic identification vulnerable to overinterpretation.
