Summary
This record is used for crustacean remains that can be recognised as malacostracan material but cannot be placed confidently into decapods, stomatopods or another more precise group. Small carapace fragments, limb pieces and isolated exoskeletal plates may remain at this level.
Quick Identification
Look for: thin calcified shell-like pieces with a smooth inner face and sculptured outer face, clearly jointed limb segments, repeated body plates, grooves, nodes or small spines. Use this broad record when the material is definitely a higher crustacean but the body region or taxonomic group is uncertain.
Identification Features
- The fossil is formed from a calcified exoskeleton rather than true vertebrate bone.
- Body or limb fragments may show repeated segmentation and sharply defined joint boundaries.
- Limb pieces are commonly tubular or flattened podomeres with articulated ends.
- Carapace fragments may carry grooves, nodes, pits, ridges or spines on the outer surface.
- Broken exoskeletal plates are usually relatively thin with a smoother internal surface than the ornamented exterior.
