Summary

Rotundorhynchus brittanicus was a long-snouted marine teleost known from its robust rostrum. The bill is deeper and more rounded in section than those of many other London Clay rostral fishes, and its internal canal system shows that it was a vascularised extension of the skull. Its exact family relationships remain outside a modern billfish family, so ecology should be inferred cautiously.

An active predatory lifestyle is plausible for a fish carrying such a reinforced rostrum, but whether the bill was used to strike, slash, probe or serve another function cannot be demonstrated from the fossil alone. The species is especially useful for showing that superficially similar Eocene bills were built in substantially different ways.

Quick Identification

Look for: a stout rostrum with an almost circular to slightly oval cross-section, one large central longitudinal canal extending close to the tip and a pair of smaller lateral nutrient canals; the bill is noticeably deep rather than blade-like.

Diagnostic Features

  • Rostrum is near-circular in cross-section and only slightly oval proximally.
  • One large central canal runs longitudinally through most of the rostrum.
  • Two smaller lateral nutrient canals flank the dominant central canal.
  • Central canal extends unusually close to the distal rostral tip.
  • Rostrum is deep and robust relative to its width rather than strongly dorsoventrally flattened.

Fossil Details

Preservation
Rostral elements are commonly broken into short sections and may be rolled or split longitudinally. Wear can remove the grooves and ridges used in comparison, while a fragmentary cross-section may be misleading if the original orientation is uncertain.

Recorded Fossil Sites

No fossil-site occurrences have yet been recorded for this species.
