Order Decapoda
Family Tumidocarcinidae
Genus Cyclocorystes

Geological age Ypresian

Summary

Cyclocorystes pulchellus was a relatively small true crab that lived on or close to the sea floor. It was probably an opportunistic feeder, picking up small invertebrates, carrion and organic material from the muddy bottom rather than specialising on a single food source.

Small crabs like this would have been important links in the London Clay food web. They helped recycle dead material, preyed on even smaller animals and in turn provided food for fish and larger predators. Its ornate shell also shows how diverse crab body shapes had become by the early Eocene.

Quick Identification

Look for: a small rounded tumidocarcinid carapace with clearly defined lobes and fine dorsal ornament, rather than the strongly spined outline of Zanthopsis or the elongate form of raninid crabs.

Diagnostic Features

  • Carapace small and broadly rounded.
  • Dorsal surface divided into distinct lobes and regions.
  • Fine ornament occurs across the carapace rather than a smooth surface.
  • Lateral margins are compact and lack the pronounced spines of Zanthopsis.
  • Species-level identification requires the combined outline, groove pattern and ornament.

Fossil Details

Typical size
Small, centimetre-scale carapace; exact population range is not securely established.
Fossil material
Carapace, Claw / Chela
Preservation
Fine ornament is vulnerable to abrasion and pyrite weathering. Central moulds may preserve the regional pattern but lose the cuticular sculpture needed for confident identification.
