Summary

Protargentinolithus extenuatus was an argentinid-grade fish known from London Clay sagittal otoliths. Argentines are generally small to medium marine fishes, many living in deeper shelf waters and feeding on zooplankton and small nekton. A comparable mid-water or near-bottom feeding ecology is plausible for this Eocene taxon, but its body and jaws are not preserved in the London Clay record.

Its otoliths are relatively large and robust, with a short rostrum and compact anterior sulcus. The species is important because later revision showed that the older generic assignment did not accurately reflect its relationships, illustrating how otolith taxonomy can change as comparative collections improve.

Quick Identification

Look for: a comparatively large, robust argentinid otolith with a short blunt-to-robust rostrum, a deep convex inner face and a relatively short anterior ostial region rather than a long projecting rostral sulcus.

Diagnostic Features

  • Sagittal otolith can reach several millimetres and is robust for an argentinid.
  • Rostrum is short and stout rather than long and needle-like.
  • Inner face is distinctly convex.
  • Ostium is comparatively short relative to the length of the otolith.
  • Posterior outline is fuller and more rounded than the anterior rostral end.

Fossil Details

Preservation
London Clay otoliths may be chipped, rounded, dissolved or polished. Damage to the rostrum and antirostrum changes the outline, while abrasion of the inner face can weaken or erase the sulcus; either can make a species-level identification unsafe.

Recorded Fossil Sites

No fossil-site occurrences have yet been recorded for this species.
