Summary

This record is used for foraminiferal tests that can be recognised as Foraminifera but cannot be assigned confidently to a lower taxonomic group. It is most useful for incomplete, worn or poorly exposed microfossils in which the overall test construction is visible but finer wall and aperture characters are not.

Quick Identification

Look for: a very small test made of one or more chambers, often coiled or arranged in a regular series, with chamber boundaries visible under magnification. The aperture and wall texture are useful when preserved, but damaged specimens may remain at phylum level.

Identification Features

  • The test is microscopic to very small and is composed of one or more connected chambers.
  • Chamber arrangement may be coiled, serial, branching or irregular depending on the group.
  • Sutures between chambers are commonly visible as grooves or lines on the test surface.
  • One or more apertures are present for communication between the organism and the exterior, although they may be damaged or obscured.
  • Test walls may be calcareous, agglutinated or otherwise distinctive, but preservation can remove the finer texture needed for lower-level identification.
